Prevent Duty
Safeguarding Our Students from Radicalisation and Extremism
At Academy 360, we are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our students. As part of this commitment, we uphold the principles of the Prevent Duty, which is a key part of the UK Government’s strategy to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.
What Is Prevent?
The Prevent strategy is part of the Government’s broader counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST. It aims to:
· Tackle the causes of radicalisation and respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism.
· Safeguard and support individuals at risk of radicalisation through early intervention and support.
· Enable those who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate.
Our Approach
At Academy 360, we take the following steps to meet our Prevent Duty responsibilities:
· Promoting British values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
· Staff training to help recognize signs of radicalisation and understand how to refer concerns.
· Robust safeguarding procedures for identifying and supporting students at risk.
· Curriculum initiatives that help students develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and respect for others.
· Partnership working with local authorities, the police, and safeguarding boards to ensure effective response and support.
What to Look Out For
Signs that a student may be at risk of radicalisation include:
· Isolating themselves from friends and family
· Sudden changes in behaviour or attitudes
· Expressing extremist views or sympathies
· Seeking to recruit others to an extremist cause
Reporting Concerns
If you are concerned that a student may be vulnerable to radicalisation, it is important to act early. Please contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). All concerns are handled sensitively and in line with our safeguarding policy.
