Year 9 Pupils Begin Their 'Routes into Medicine' Journey
Back
Year 9 pupils took their first steps towards careers in healthcare last Wednesday as we welcomed colleagues from the University of Sunderland into school for the launch of our Routes into Medicine programme.
The initiative, delivered in partnership with the University of Sunderland, is designed to build knowledge, raise aspirations and give pupils meaningful insight into pathways into medicine and the wider healthcare sector. Across three encounters, pupils will explore what a future in medicine could look like and gain practical experience to support their ambitions.
During the first workshop, pupils focused on understanding the body’s major organs and their functions. They were introduced to the correct use of a stethoscope and had the opportunity to practise key clinical skills in a supportive environment. The session concluded with a medical terminology challenge, helping pupils consolidate their learning in an engaging and memorable way.
Later this term, pupils will take part in a second in-school workshop, before visiting the University of Sunderland campus for their final encounter. The visit will offer a first-hand experience of University life and provide valuable insight into studying medicine at degree level.
This strong start marks the beginning of an inspiring journey for our aspiring medics and reflects our continued commitment to broadening horizons and supporting pupils to make informed choices about their futures.
